Gran Tarajal: a hidden gem of Fuerteventura full of surprises

Gran Tarajal is a picturesque seaside town in the southern part of Fuerteventura. It wins visitors over with its authentic atmosphere, the hospitality of its residents and its beautiful beaches. Although it is not as well known as some of the island's other resorts, Gran Tarajal offers a wealth of sights and activities that will please any traveller.

What to see in Gran Tarajal

1. Gran Tarajal beach

The town beach is one of the main draws here. With fine black volcanic sand, calm water and a gradual entry into the sea, it is ideal for families with children. There is plenty of room to relax and to walk along the shore. The beach has all the facilities you need — showers, toilets, and beach bars (chiringuitos) where you can try local specialities.

2. Paseo Marítimo

A lovely promenade runs along the beach, perfect for an evening stroll with a view of the ocean. Lined with palm trees, it offers a number of restaurants and cafés where you can rest and taste traditional Canarian cooking such as "papas arrugadas" (salted potatoes) with "mojo" sauce, or fresh seafood.

3. Parque Félix López

If you are looking for somewhere quiet to unwind, Parque Félix López near the town centre is an ideal choice. It is one of many parks on Fuerteventura and an oasis of greenery and shade in the island's otherwise dry landscape. Perfect for a picnic or simply a moment of calm — and there are a few play features for children too.

4. Art galleries and cultural centres

Gran Tarajal can also boast several interesting cultural institutions. Local galleries regularly exhibit work by Canarian artists and offer a window onto the island's rich cultural scene. The cultural centres host events, concerts and exhibitions that let you glimpse the life and traditions of the local community.

5. The market in Gran Tarajal

To experience local life at its most genuine, visit the market held every Sunday. You will find fresh fruit, vegetables and fish, as well as local crafts, souvenirs and other products typical of the region.

Prices and accommodation

Prices in Gran Tarajal are very reasonable compared with the more touristy parts of Fuerteventura. Accommodation can be found at sensible rates, whether hotels, apartments or guesthouses. The average price for a hotel night is around €60–100 depending on the season and type of accommodation. Eating out locally is also affordable; a main course costs €10–15 on average.

The Gran Tarajal carnival

One of the town's biggest events is its annual carnival, among the liveliest and most colourful celebrations on the island. The Gran Tarajal carnival is known for its vivid parades, dance performances and music concerts. It traditionally takes place in February or March, depending on the date of Easter.

During the carnival the town comes alive with a joyful atmosphere as residents and visitors alike dress up in colourful costumes and join the parades and other festivities. One of the highlights is the "Entierro de la Sardina" (Burial of the Sardine), when a giant sardine effigy is symbolically burned to mark the end of the celebrations.

Gran Tarajal is a place where you can enjoy peace and quiet far from the busy tourist centres without missing out on the experiences that make a holiday memorable. From beautiful beaches through cultural discoveries to an authentic carnival, Gran Tarajal has something for every visitor. If you are looking for a place on Fuerteventura that offers the best of the island without the crowds, this should be your choice.
