Fuerteventura, an island of windmills and endless beaches, hides many treasures. One of them is the majestic Faro de La Entallada lighthouse, rising from a cliff with a view over the endless blue of the Atlantic. Built in 1955, this imposing lighthouse is a wonderful spot for lovers of photography, nature and quiet corners where time seems to have stopped. It is only 6 km from our apartment.
The lighthouse stands in the municipality of Tuineje, a few kilometres from the towns of Gran Tarajal and Las Playitas. Notably, Faro de La Entallada is the closest point in the Canary Islands to the African continent — the distance to Morocco in a straight line is just 100 km. This strategic position gives the place a wholly unique atmosphere, one where Africa feels within arm's reach.
A panorama from 200 metres up
If you dare to climb the wooden staircase to the top of the cliff, you will be rewarded with a breathtaking panorama. From 200 metres up, the endless ocean spreads out on one side while on the other lies the fascinating interior and the volcanic landscape of the Cuchillos de Vigán natural monument. The contrast between the blue surface of the ocean and the harsh but beautiful volcanic terrain makes for an unforgettable experience.
This exceptional place also gives you the chance to see the majestic birds of prey that inhabit the air above the lighthouse. With a little luck you may spot a golden eagle or a rare saker falcon. It is therefore a paradise not only for photographers but also for nature lovers and birdwatchers.
A lighthouse with a rich history
The lighthouse itself is a fine example of traditional Fuerteventura architecture. It was built from red stone blocks that give it its characteristic appearance. The design was completed in 1953 under Carlos Alcón Sanz, who also created other significant lighthouses including Casa del Mar in Tarfaya, Morocco. In its day La Entallada was the most powerful lighthouse in the Canary Islands, which underlines its importance for navigation in the area.
Today the lighthouse forms part of the SIVE system (Integrated External Surveillance System), which monitors migration and helps ensure safety in the region.
A magical atmosphere and an unforgettable experience
A visit to Faro de La Entallada is an unforgettable experience combining unspoilt natural beauty, fascinating history and the magical atmosphere of a place where Africa almost touches Europe. If you are planning a trip to Fuerteventura, you should certainly not leave out this unique gem. The lighthouse offers not only stunning views but also a calm and inspiration you will not find elsewhere.
